#22: It Feels Nice to Be Nice
Happy Sunday! It feels nice to be nice; it feels good to be good. Read on!
Life is busy. We all have stuff to do... some of us more than others. It's easy to get wrapped up in the good ol' to-do list and go through the motions of life, exchanging rote pleasantries as we absently come into contact with other people (or avoid them by going through self check-out lines!).
Over the past couple of days, I have found myself on a few customer service phone calls, needing to request help with online tools, checking on order status, etc. These are not known to be fun calls, as "customer service" isn't always friendly, and we often find these calls to be "a hassle" or "a waste of time." It is easy - once again - to simply say please and thank you like you're "supposed to" (although many don't even do that anymore, sadly), but I chose something different. I knew the calls would take a while, as I pressed mindlessly through automated systems to get to the actual human being who may or may not be able to help. As I waited, of course I got a few things done on my computer, but when I finally reached the live people, I chose to enjoy every call. I was present in each exchange, acknowledging and appreciating the assistance I was given rather than quietly being frustrated or trying to get 15 other things done at the same time. Not surprisingly, every call went amazingly well. The customer service folks were all kind and helpful; they were laughing with me and chatting, and you could almost hear the smile through the phone as I ended each call thanking them by name, as I had made a point to remember their names when they initially introduced themselves. It is one thing to go through the motions of "being nice," but to be truly nice, feels TRULY NICE.
It's similar with all areas of health. Take food, as the easiest example. When you eat poorly, you feel gross; when you eat well, your body feels awesome. When you don't drink enough water, you are tired and run down, and your skin usually hates you; when you are well-hydrated, you have energy, feel refreshed, have glowing skin, and you're ready for the day. Work? When you hate your job, you hate going to work; when you love your job, you love going. Fitness? When you laze around all day, barely getting off the couch... you guessed it! You feel lethargic, sad, and unmotivated. When you incorporate activity into your day, you are energized, happy, and ready to take on the world. What about mindset? When you are negative, dishonest, or make poor choices, you feel bad; when you have a positive perspective and disposition, you are honest, and you make the best choices... you feel GOOD.
I think you've got the picture! We make these little choices everyday. Choose well, and feel well. Let me know how it goes! Cheers!
