#34: What Do You Mean... An Audition?! (I just threw my comfort zone out the window!)

What Do You Mean… An Audition?!

I know you’re all on the edge of your seats to find out about

the audition that I accidentally went on this past Thursday!

So, here’s the story:

I received an email a couple of weeks ago for a casting call for NASM personal trainers for an upcoming photoshoot.  I fell into the demographic they were seeking, as did many others, so we all received this email.  I had the day off, and I thought,

“Why not?”

I’ve done a couple of photoshoots for friends to help them build their portfolios, and it was super fun!  I showed up during the call time and saw a sign that said “Auditions.”  I thought, “Hmmm… that’s strange, I thought this was for a photoshoot.”  You don’t really “audition” for a photoshoot. I assumed I would go in, they would see if I fit the look, maybe take a couple of stills, and that would be it.  Nope.  I walked up to the registration table to find a stack of sides sitting next to it.  For those of you unfamiliar with the industry, sides are like snippets of script that you use during, well… an audition.  Oh goodness.  This wasn’t what I expected.  I’m not a huge fan of seeing myself on video.  With stills, I can be photogenic-ish at times; but, video?!  I did one webinar episode for a friend, and it was also super fun… but I hadn’t auditioned for it, eek!

I mentioned we would be talking about

stepping out of our comfort zones…

well, that is exactly what I did!  I had not auditioned for anything since the musical I did senior year of high school!  I am neither a model nor an actor, so I have no headshot and only a bit of informal experience.  I was like, “Well, I’m here, so why not?!”  I took a sheet of sides and found a spot on the couch while I waited, smiling at all the newcomers as they arrived.  I so badly wanted to just chat with everyone and ask them about their lives, but some people seemed really focused, and I didn’t want to interrupt.  When my name was called, I entered a room to find just two people inside (thank God!), both SO nice (actually, EVERYONE I encountered there was really nice!).  I read through twice, and then went through a teleprompter dialogue twice.  That was it.  It is my understanding that there were over 350 people auditioning.  I wonder if they all thought it was a photoshoot too, haha!  Anyway, I am NOT expecting to get the part, which is totally okay!  That isn’t the purpose of my story.  I’m betting there were way more qualified people there, and I say cheers to the person who gets it!

Thank you for letting me be a part of your journey!

It’s funny because I used to work in film/TV (and loved it!).  I was a Production Coordinator (POC) and 2nd Assistant Director, depending on the project.  As a POC, I would sometimes sit in on the casting during pre-production.  The other day, I felt like I was on the wrong side of the camera, haha!  I was given two notes:

slow down a little, and don’t overthink it.

HAHAHA!  I cannot tell you how many times I have heard those two things throughout the course of my life!  Well, at least I brought my authentic self, right?!  Both are great pieces of advice for life in general too!  Anyway,

I tried something new, had a great experience, met some nice folks, and had an awesome time.

THAT is what can happen when you step out of your comfort zone!  Inspired to try it yourself?  I hope so!!  Let me know how it goes when you do!

Until Next Week,

Be Well and Be Good!
